A couple of weeks ago I was walking through the streets of Athens, Greece with George Patsouras, pastor of the Foursquare Church in that city and national leader of Foursquare Greece. George has a habit of asking probing questions. At one point he asked me about the growth and development of a particular movement of Churches that started in the United States and has grown to about 1600 churches around the world. A number of these churches are having incredible impact in their cities and around the world.
George asked me, “Why do you think they are being so blessed?”
The conversation got me to thinking. I began asking myself, “What are the common characteristics of churches that are obviously blessed by God?” I have not done any scientific research on this; I just started thinking about common characteristics I have observed over the last 30 years in more than 40 countries. I see at least 10 characteristics that lead to being a church God blesses. Here they are:
- Passionate commitment to the Word of God.
- Unreserved devotion to Jesus Christ.
- A generous spirit.
- The Mission of God is the central activity of the church.
- Bold faith.
- Deep humility.
- Holy Spirit empowered and dependent.
- Vibrant fellowship.
- Prayer is central to worship, ministry, administration, outreach, and discipleship.
- A joyful attitude.
These churches vary in size, style, and ministry expression, but they all share these 10 common traits: both in the leadership and in the congregations. The good news is every congregation regardless of size or location can cultivate these characteristics.
Remember:
Character is destiny.
Who we are determines what we become.
Take a look at the list, ask God to speak to you through it, then go obey what He speaks to you. Let the blessing begin.
